It's a BOY!!!!!!!!!
Owen Rayne Gillespie was born at around 8:30 AM. He is handsome and healthy, has all ten toes, all ten fingers, and two of everything he should have two of. Erin is tired but radiant and beautiful.
Erin has placed a temporary embargo on pictures right now, and I'll honour that. In any event, he's in that newborn stage where they all look like Truman Capote or Winston Churchill or ... well, a piece of unwashed fruit. That will change.
They liked the name Owen, and Rayne is a blend of two family names on Matthew's side, Ralph and Wayne. Another thing he inherited from that side is flaming red hair.
No birth stats just yet - he was too fresh when we got in to see him. I'll include them in a longer story. But one lil anecdote:
As we were sitting in the waiting room, doing what you do, my wife all of a sudden pipes up with "I call first to hold the new baby!"
Allie barely looked up from her magazine. "I will take you down, bitch. Remember what happened when people tried to get between me and Erin's bouquet."
We all laughed ... then looked up, and Matthew was there and my world exploded. In the best possible way.
Woo hoo! Congratulations and blessings all around. Oh, such joy! I do have a thing for red-haired boys.
This is one of the things I love about blogging. The honor of getting to be over-the-moon happy for people you don't know. Big smiles in Maryland, for you, Owen. Welcome to the world.

I love that name! What a good idea, blending two names together as well. Congrats Erin and Matthew! And thank you two for making the blogosphere smile broadly today. I've been grinning like a damn fool ever since I heard!
BTW um... I don't think I've ever heard of a newborn being compared to unwashed fruit, but now that I think about it, it does make sense. A little. Mine looked a little bit like baby monkeys... I don't know why the girls get so mad at me when I bring it up.
Hugs and congrats to you and your family, Nils. And here's a toast to the next chapter in your lives and the best journey, yet. :)

When I was awaiting news on the birth of my first grandchild, a friend tried to explain what it would be like. After struggling, he shrugged and said, "when it happens you will understand why I could not explain."
'My world exploded' comes close. Congrats - it will only get better (as hard as that is to believe right now.
Another circle has been closed, and life unfolds as it is meant to.

Congratulations! I'm so pleased for you so you know that over here we're grinning like idiots too. Oh and I used so many exclamation points in my e-mail to you that the filters thought I was telling you that you'd won the lottery and bounced it back. I imagine you're feeling rather like you *did* win the lottery! :)

I was felled by a migraine this weekend and am just now getting up and around to checking on things. Glad I did. October is a great month to be born in. With a grandson you'll get to experience the "other" kind of baby. The kind (as Lily Tomlin says) who makes you have to lean WAAAY BACK when you change their diaper. So glad things went well. Congratulations all around!
