Brrrrrriiiiing.
Me: "Hello?"
Allie: "Hi. So, I'm at the Humane Society, and I have a question ..."
Me: (cautiously) "Yes ...?"
Allie: "So, you know when the puppies all left, and it was really quiet and lonely and boring in your office and you guys said that you'd do it again ...?"
Me: "Ah, jeez ..."
Allie: "This time there are only four. And no mom, so it'll be easier. And they're a month old. And Dad ... two of them look like Golden Retrievers and one looks like a Border Collie! The cuteness, it kills."
Me: "We'll have to ..."
Allie: "... ask Mom? She says "Yes". So it's up to you ..."
Me: "Ah, crap."
Allie: "See you in a few minutes. They're already in my car."
Sigh. They just arrived. She was right about the cuteness. It really does kill.
They needed to be out of the shelter because they don't have a mom and the other dogs are big fat bullies who bark at them ... or something like that. All four are boys.
Here we go again ...
Meet ... uh ... "One" ... and-a "Two" ... and-a "Three" ... and-a "Four"
Suggestions for themed names are now being accepted.
Evidently, this is "... only for a while."
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Permission to swoon, please?!?!?!?
Posted by: Jodi | January 11, 2007 at 11:39 AM
Permission granted, although I suspect you, too, presented me with a fait accompli ... I don't want to know the person who can resist those faces.
Posted by: Nils | January 11, 2007 at 11:53 AM
Oh sweet Jebus...both my ovaries just exploded. What a mess! And the pain! And yet,it was worth looking into those innocent and furry visages. Who can resist those faces? A pox on the big bully dogs who park at these sweeties. This is the universe calling, Nils. Finding good homes for these babies is now your sacred duty. It we lived closer and if we didn't already have two dogs, three cats and a snake...I'd take one in a heartbeat.

Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, La-La and Po?! Beautiful fluffy balls of doggy cuteness! You have to keep one. I have had two retrievers, one called Sam and one called Harvey. We also had a Border Collie called Sam (already named when we got him).
I expect video by morning. :)

I think you should seriously consider investing in tile floors. ;)
Posted by: Laura | January 11, 2007 at 03:19 PM

Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Moe. That is the first thing I thought of. Not very literary but awfully clever I thought.
(does anyone remember the "eeny-meeny-miney-moe, catch a tiger by the toe, if he hollers make him pay fifty dollars everyday" from their childhood? or was it just a Southern thang?)

If the puppies get really naughty you could threaten to name them Bush, Cheney, Rove, and Rumsfeld.
But don't. The puppies are way too cute.
Posted by: Squirl | January 11, 2007 at 08:15 PM
I think Laura's right about the tile floors. Maybe you could tile your office floor and put a drain in. Let's face it - Allie's not going to stop bringing home adorable puppies.
Posted by: Bucky Four-Eyes | January 11, 2007 at 08:32 PM
Who, What, I Dunno, and Why. Oh gawd, they're cute!
Posted by: shari | January 11, 2007 at 08:36 PM
Themed names:
MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE, JOHN (no, I am not particularly religious, and certainly not Christian fundamentalist; they were just four themed male names, and... I kinda like 'em.)
MICKEY, DONALD, GOOFY, BUGS (just showing you my real colours, heh, heh...)
MIKE, MAX, MOE, MEL (the theme? alliteration, of course!)
O.K. That's all from me. I need to take a break from puppy cuteness. Gotta get prepared. Because I know the cuteness factor is going to multiply over the next few weeks.
(Allie: Good for you. I just knew that your first "puppy foster home" adventure would not be the last.) :-)))

I *really* like John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Awesome, Bucky.
And Nilbo? Can I please, pretty-please have that first one? I'll pay for shipping.

Thanks, Nilbo!

Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker, Dr. Bruce Banner
The Four Horsement of the Apocalypse
White, Red, Black, Pale
The Four Noble Truths of Buddhism (kind of ironic)
1. Life means suffering.
2. The origin of suffering is attachment.
3. The cessation of suffering is attainable.
4. The path to the cessation of suffering.
The Four Chaos Attractors
1. Point
2. Cycle
3. Torus
4. Strange

Unbelievable! They are even cuter than the last litter!
Posted by: Lyn | January 11, 2007 at 09:26 PM
Sweet Pea's idea for names (even after explaining to her they were all boys) -- "Three of them should be named Lily, and one should be Ashley."
My ideas for names:
Faith, Hope, Peace, Love
Waffles, French Toast, Cinnamon Rolls, and Bagels
Coke, Pepsi, 7Up, Root Beer
Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Fudge Ripple
Fonz, Ralph, Potsie and Richie
Dammit, Jaysus, Stopthat and Getawayfromthere
They are adorable, Nils... boy are you in trouble... get the tile floor with the drain in the middle. You'll need it.
Posted by: CircusKelli | January 11, 2007 at 10:44 PM
Winken, Blinken, Nod, Shoe.
Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo.
Westley, Inigo, Fezzik, Vizzini.
Kronk, Stitch, Shrek, Scrat. (say that ten times fast)
(I'm not sitting in front of my DVD shelf, I swear)
And keeping with the family's theme of names from musicals:
Raoul, Tony, Amos, Rolfe.
(Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Chicago, Sound of Music)
okay, I'm done.
Posted by: Erin | January 11, 2007 at 11:12 PM
Okay, we really might have to do the Ninja Turtle thing.
Or, for Kalki: (Uncle) Jesse, Jake (in Progress), Tony (Gates), and Stamos.
However, since our matriarch has decided that she absolutely must keep one, we'll let her name that one and go from there.
(Hee hee hee)

oh my god...for serious, the cuteness does kill. How can you stand it?
Love the Beatles name suggestions!

I may be a little late but I would suggest-Boggie, Birdy, Putter and Bunker.
Or Bogart, Spencer, Gable and Cooper.

after reading all the suggestions--I like Sweet Pea's idea--teehee and the TMNT names--Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michaelangelo--that would be so cute!

Un, deux, trois, quatre
Posted by: sheryl | January 12, 2007 at 11:16 AM
Love your love story! Especially since my mom grew up in Canada. The dogs are cute. Reminds me of a friend of mine whose dad was a civil engineer and his four kids had the following nicknames: Rusty, Dusty, Sandy and Rocky.
Posted by: Mary | January 12, 2007 at 11:25 AM
Hee, Allie, you rock. For Nils to call for Stamos, and snuggle Stamos, and surely even smooch Stamos from time to time....such poetic justice.
Mwahahaha.
Posted by: kalki | January 12, 2007 at 11:34 AM
I like William's suggestion of Bogart, Spencer, Gable, and Cooper. :)
I was also thinking of the movie "The Fox and The Hound" and the names in there - Tod and Copper - but that is only 2 for that particular theme.. but the other two could be Chip and Dale. All Disney characters? Even if they are from different movies. :)
Posted by: Katie | January 12, 2007 at 12:23 PM
oh i am so lame- totally missed the fact that they are all of the male variety d-oh

my little girl was thinking and said- (because she is so talkative at 16 days of age)-why not musketeers? Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan?
